Summer Climate in Mallorca

Visiting Mallorca in May is a delightful experience, as the island enjoys one of the best mild climates in the Mediterranean during this month. The weather is typically warm but not overly hot, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Evenings are pleasantly cool, with temperatures dropping to around 57°F to 64°F (14°C to 18°C), making the ambient environment comfortable for nighttime strolls and outdoor dining.

Marking the transition from spring to summer in Mallorca, May brings longer days and plenty of pleasant sunshine. The island experiences minimal rainfall during this month, with an average of 5-6 rainy days. These showers are usually brief and followed by clear skies, so even if the forecast calls for a bit of inclement weather it shouldn’t disrupt your plans significantly. The sea temperature also starts to warm up during this time, averaging around 66°F (19°C), which is ideal for water activities like swimming, snorkeling, and sailing.

It's worth noting that May falls outside the peak tourist season, meaning you can explore Mallorca's attractions without the overwhelming cruise crowds that flock to the island in July and August. This makes the month of May an excellent time to visit the island if you prefer a more relaxed, intimate experience that doesn’t require advanced planning to visit the most popular spots.

When packing for a trip to Mallorca in May, it's important to consider the varying temperatures and potential for a few rainy days. Lightweight airy fabrics are key, allowing you to adapt to the changing weather throughout the day. Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses are additional essentials to protect your skin from the blazing Mediterranean sun.

What to Wear in Mallorca?

Sophisticated Jumpsuits

Sophisticated jumpsuits are an easy breezy outfit choice for your Mallorca vacation. The beauty of all-in-one jumpsuits lies in their simplicity and ease of styling. You don't need to worry about coordinating separate pieces, which saves you time and effort when getting ready. Plus, they offer a polished look that can easily be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, making them ideal for long days on the island encompassing daytime sightseeing into evening dinners. With a range of versatile silhouettes to flatter both your figure and style preferences, wide-leg, fitted, and culotte pairs are some common selections.

Opt for light-colored, breathable fabrics like cotton, chiffon, or linen that keep you cool in the warm May climate. A sleeveless or short-sleeved jumpsuit with a relaxed fit is perfect for exploring the island's charming villages or enjoying a leisurely lunch by the sea. Pair your favorite jumpsuit with comfortable espadrilles and accessorize with a wide-brimmed hat and straw beach bag to complete the carefree, sun-soaked look.

Vibrant Dresses

Vibrant dresses are a must-have for any trip to Mallorca, embodying the island's lively, colorful atmosphere. When packing for your trip, include a mix of casual and dressy options to ensure you have the perfect option for every occasion. During the day, opt for bright, bold colors and playful prints that reflect the island's sunny disposition. Floral patterns, tropical motifs, and bold geometric designs are all eye-catching prints that will make your sea goddess fit pop against the picturesque backdrop of Mallorca's beaches and towns. A sundress with a flattering drop waist or flowing silhouette is ideal for casual outings, providing relaxed ease of movement that generates a cooling breeze as you walk. For evening outings, select dresses with more structured details and sophisticated cuts. A cinched waist can accentuate your waist while rich, saturated colors and metallic accents add eye-catching visual interest.

Teeny Bikinis

Teeny bikinis are the ultimate beachwear for soaking up the sun while enjoying Mallorca's stunning coastlines. These minimalist swimsuits allow you to achieve an even tan as you embrace the island's laid-back vibe. When choosing a bikini, look for styles that offer a flattering fit and enhance your natural shape–triangle bikinis with adjustable ties are a popular choice, allowing you to customize the fit for maximum comfort with countless ways to tie the same top into several styles. High-cut bottoms can elongate your legs, while cheeky Brazilian bottoms provide minimal coverage for optimal tanning. If you need a bit more support, look for sets with underwire and padded bikini tops to give you additional lift and shape. Mix and match tops and bottoms to create unique combinations and keep your beach look fresh and fun. When packing your beach bag, don't forget to include a lightweight cover-up or sarong. These versatile pieces can be easily thrown on when you need a break from the sun or want to grab a drink at the nearby beach bar.

Linen Pants

Linen pants are ideal for the island's warm weather, keeping you cool while looking effortlessly chic. Whether you prefer classic neutrals or bold patterns, these lightweight, breathable pants can be dressed up or down for various occasions–like whether they’re worn as a bikini cover-up or as a proper pair of pants in a standalone outfit– to create a relaxed yet stylish ensemble. For a casual daytime look which captures the essence of a mermaid ashore, opt for the classic comfort of loose-fitting linen pants in light colors like white, beige, or pastel shades comprised of ethereal sea-inspired textures. This style of pant is also quite easy to fit amongst your other packing list must-haves, as they take up minimal space and resist wrinkles.

Wrap Skirts

Wrap skirts are a more feminine option to incorporate as bottoms into your mermaid-inspired looks, allowing for personal customization as they can often be adjusted to wrap into a range of silhouettes. Select skirts in vibrant colors and playful prints for a touch of island flair, or elevate your overall look by searching for pieces composed of sophisticated silk fabrics and adorned with elegant details like ruffles and beaded trim. Wrap skirts are also perfect for beach days, as they can be easily thrown over your swimsuit to be worn as a decorative cover-up. This versatile outfit element allows you to transition effortlessly from the beach to a nearby café without needing a full outfit change.

Tropical Bandanas

Add a splash of island charm by accessorizing with fun and functional tropical bandanas. One of the most popular ways to wear a tropical bandana is as a headscarf. Tie it around the crown of your head to keep your hair in check on breezy days and to protect your scalp from the scorching sun. Tropical bandanas can also be used as neck scarves if you’re going for more of a retro glamor vibe. Tie one loosely around your neck for a chic, bohemian look, or knot it tightly for a more classic style. Another creative use for tropical bandanas is tied as an accessory around the handle of your tote or beach bag to add a pop of color and personalize your bag. This small detail can make a big difference in the perception of your overall look, tying together your whole outfit with a cohesive, creative touch.

How I Styled Mallorca Outfits

I spent four days in Mallorca during the end of May 2023, and we regrettably arrived to the island during an unusual cold front. While I had initially dreamed of spending blissful days lounging under the warm sun, I had to get a bit creative with my outfits to accommodate for the unexpected winds and rain. Nevertheless, I stuck to the same beach-inspired principles curating my coastal looks, leading me to style the following outfits.

A woman in a white summer dress strolls through a vibrant garden on a sunny day in Mallorca.

On my first day in Mallorca, I took advantage of the sunniest weather we’d see this whole trip to wear the following island-style inspired look:

  • Allie Set White ($78) from Princess Polly. I adore the feminine details of this matching set that inherently incorporate movement into the outfit, from the twisted fabric bust of the top to the tiered layers of the skirt. The removable straps mean you can switch between a tank top and strapless look, and even as individual pieces these two items are cute enough to stand on their own—the bottoms have become my go-to skirt for endless occasion!

  • Somewhat hidden are my go-to leather strappy shoes: my tan and champagne pair of Reef Sandals Cushion Bounce Vista Womens ($55). After purchasing these years ago on a beach vacation to Hawaii they have become my tried and true coastal shoe, since the high-energy rebound footbed and anatomical arch support keep my feet comfortable throughout a full day of sightseeing, while the waterproof materials let me transition from city to sand in a snap!

  • My final accessory was a Universal Thread Round Rattan Crossbody that’s no longer sold online, but you can create a similar look with any woven bag built from natural fibers and with neutral leather detailing.

While this photo of my second day outfit doesn’t reveal how devastatingly cold and windy the environment was, I’m always committed to getting the picture and quickly took off my towel blanket to capture this look. This is a reminder to not believe everything you see on social media, but for a genuinely warm beach day I’d wear this ensemble again including my:

  • Augustine Rust Halter Jumpsuit ($68) from 12th Tribe. A breezy jumpsuit built for walks on the beach, this one-piece is made of comfort-based fabric for all day wear and designed with an adjustable cinched tie at the bust for a customizable fit. While I wouldn’t necessarily recommend you purchase this exact jumpsuit since mine shrunk beyond recognition after one wash, a similar sophisticated jumpsuit from another vendor is sure to do the trick.

  • I wore the same sandals as described in the look above and accessorized with my Polished Gold Frame Jack Sunglasses ($180) from Ray-Ban. These classic gold-rimmed sunglasses that are quite flattering on most face shapes given their almost completely circular shape with squared off edges on the top of the frame

A trip to a Mediterranean island wouldn’t be complete without a boat day, and while I had initially envisioned a skimpier look wearing only a teeny bikini, the cool day required me to stay bundled up in the new pieces I had purchased hours beforehand from the Stradivarius location in Palma:

  • Textured Tank Top in Ecru ($20) from Stradivarius. This paper mache-esque basic white tank top is all things feminine chic—creating dimension with the textured fabric and incorporating subtle flair like the frilled neck and hemlines.

  • Relaxed Fit Linen Look Shirt in Khaki ($23) from Stradivarius. My second piece acquired from the same brand on this day, the relaxed linen fabric of this breezy button down creates a carefree silhouette in an ocean-inspired turquoise color to altogether embody coastal charm.

  • My Grey Bandit Adina Button Down Set Bottoms are no longer sold online, but their vertical ribbed fabric contrasted with the horizontal layout of my textured top to add a further depth to my overall ensemble. These linen pants have a similar frilled hem on the bottom of each leg, with these minor details tying my disparate top and pants together perfectly into a final look which appears it could’ve been sold together from the start!

  • Evidently we had killed a few hours shopping before this boat ride, as my beaded white and gold necklace is from the local boutique Bossa. My reflective Light Blue Flash Hexagonal Flat Lenses ($205) are my second pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses, and given their blue tone are often the pair I break out for any kind of ocean occasion.
