Spring Climate in Paris

Spring in Paris is a season of renewal, with the city coming alive after the frosty winter months. April temperatures typically range from 46°F (8°C) in the early morning to 61°F (16°C) in the afternoon. The weather is generally mild, but it can be quite inconsistent from day to day, so it's essential to be prepared for different conditions. In late April of 2024, I traversed the city during a considerable cold front with daily high temperatures ranging from 50-58°F, so even if your heart is singing with thoughts of a sunny spring be sure to check the forecast in advance because you may be better off bundled up with gloves and a scarf!

April in Paris sees an average of 11 rainy days, meaning that while you can expect some showers during the average week, there will also be plenty of dry, sunny days to enjoy the city's outdoor attractions. The rainfall is usually light to moderate, but a sudden downpour is always a possibility–and there’s usually gusty winds through the arrondissements that can blow the droplets around. That being said, you’re better off packing a waterproof trench coat even if the forecast looks all clear; an umbrella is generally another good idea, but it’s easier to just purchase one for cheap from a street vendor if the need arises.

The length of daylight increases significantly in April, with the sun rising around 7:00 AM and setting close to 8:30 PM. This more than twelve-hour day gives you ample time to explore the city's sights, however the extended hours are also accompanied with temperatures that vary throughout the day, so be prepared to add on layers during the early morning and late afternoons. For example, a light cardigan that can be easily tied around your shoulders will keep you comfortable as the weather changes.

Paris is not known for extreme weather events in the spring, but it's still wise to keep an eye on the forecast during your stay. The city's public transportation system, including the metro and bus lines, is well-equipped to handle the occasional rainstorm, so you should be fine to continue your sightseeing without much disruption. If you're planning to visit outdoor attractions like the gardens of Versailles or the parks around the Eiffel Tower, check the weather before you head out for the day and dress accordingly.

What to Wear in Paris?

Timeless Tops

When it comes to tops, Parisian fashion emphasizes timeless elegance and versatility. Packing a selection of classic silhouettes will ensure you look effortlessly chic without appearing to try too hard, no matter the occasion. Invest in a few high-quality basics like well-fitted white tees and ribbed tank tops. These can be dressed up with a leather jacket for a sophisticated look or worn casually with jeans for a laid-back, model off duty vibe. Consider bringing a tuxedo vest, which adds a touch of polished androgyny and can be layered over dresses or worn as part of a matching two-piece set. Corset bustiers are a more feminine option, shaping a flattering hourglass figure that pairs well with skirts and high-waisted trousers.

Choosing neutral colors like black, white, and beige ensures your look will be easy to mix and match with other pieces in your wardrobe, allowing you to create multiple outfits from a limited capsule closet selection. Stripes–notably Breton stripes–are a lasting pattern that never goes out of style. For a touch of luxury, consider tops made from high-quality fabrics like silk or cashmere. These materials not only look elegant but also feel velvety soft and comfortable against the skin, making them ideal for long days of sightseeing.

Basic Bottoms

Crochet is the perfect textile for the temperate climate Bottoms form the foundation of any outfit, and in Paris, simplicity paired with sophistication is key. A few carefully chosen pieces can take you from a casual café visit to an elegant evening out. Silk skirts offer sleek comfort and glamorous style; opt for a fashion-forward midi length which allows you to easily move while maintaining an air of elegance–even when riding the metro from place to place! Pleated trousers are another versatile choice which can be dressed down with a simple tee or dressed up with a tailored blazer.

Flowy culottes are perfect for those warmer spring days. Their loose fit makes them nearly as comfortable as pajama pants, while the cropped length creates a constant breeze ensuring you won’t get too toasty walking around. High-waisted styles are particularly flattering, accentuating your waist and elongating your legs. For a touch of Parisian flair, consider trousers with subtle heritage patterns, such as pinstripes or small checks: these traditional geometric patterns add visual interest to your outfit without overwhelming your look.

When selecting bottoms, prioritize comfort and quality as the two key factors driving your purchase intent. Well-made pieces not only look noticeably nicer but also last longer, ensuring you can enjoy them for many trips to come. Pay attention to the fit, as well-tailored bottoms can make a significant difference in conveying a refined appearance.

Dainty Dresses

Dresses are a quintessential part of Parisian style, blending elegance and effortlessness as this single item can become your whole outfit–no need to worry about styling any disparate pieces! For your spring trip to Paris, consider packing a variety of dresses that can be worn for different occasions and in shifting climates–think easy, breezy, beautiful (CoverGirl!). Short dresses with spaghetti straps are perfect for warmer days, providing a light and airy feel as you glide down the boulevards. Choose designs with delicate details like lace trims and subtle ruffles to add a touch of femininity. Tulle dresses, with their soft and flowy fabric, are ideal for a romantic evening out under the warm glow of the twinkling Eiffel Tower.

Simplicity is key when it comes to Parisian dresses. An understated, well-cut dress can be incredibly chic with the right accessories; look to achieve a balanced and refined appearance without wearing overly flashy items—instead, focus on quality fabrics and impeccable tailoring. Seek out dresses with clean lines and minimalistic designs that can be easily dressed up or down. A little black dress which can easily transition from daytime sightseeing to evening dining, for instance, is a must-have for any Paris trip. It can be worn with a blazer and pumps for a night out or with a leather jacket and kitten heels for a more casual look.

Jet Black Flats

Footwear is crucial when exploring a sprawling city like Paris, where you'll be putting in tens of thousands of steps per day. Jet black flats as a general category is your guiding light here, since even a single pair of shoes with these characteristics is guaranteed to match all your outfits while offering the comfortable durability needed for daily wear. Ballet slippers are a classic option, gracing your feet with a sleek and feminine look in a city home to one of the oldest, most prestigious ballet companies in the world. Plus they’re lightweight and flexible, making them quite easy to pack–even in an overflowing suitcase. Look for flats like mary janes and slingback kitten heels with cushioned insoles to ensure proper arch support during long days of sightseeing.

When selecting your footwear, consider the composition materials as well. Durable leather is a stylish option that can withstand the occasional rain shower, while patent leather adds a touch of sophisticated shine and suede evokes a softer, more luxurious feel. Ensure your shoes are well-broken before your trip to avoid blisters and discomfort.

Luxe Accessories

Accessories play a crucial role in completing your Parisian look, as the right accessories can transform even the simplest outfit into something remarkable. If you really want to lean into your tourist status, look no further than the stereotypical beret you’ll find sold in every souvenir shop. Assuming you’d rather blend in with the locals, chunky gold jewelry, such as vintage watches, bold rings, and stackable bracelets add a touch of glamor and subtle poise to any outfit. A dainty handbag is another must-have accessory; opt for classic designs like baguette bags and envelope clutches in neutral colors which can easily transition from day to night. Crossbody bags are practical for daytime sightseeing, and those equipped with a detachable strap can transform into a small clutch perfect for evening outings.

Fine Fabric Accents

Incorporating fine fabric accents is the final detail to consider when elevating your Paris looks. Versatile silk ribbons add a touch of romantic refinement whether they’re inherently part of your outfit’s detailing or simply tied into your hair. Lace bows are another elegant feature that can be attached to a blouse or used to adorn a handbag. I’m partial to intricate floral features and thus looked for pieces with a detachable silk rose clip that I can now use to decorate other items! Scarves are another staple in Parisian fashion, elevating your ensemble with a more unexpected statement piece beyond the basic necklace. A thin silk neck scarf can add a pop of color to your outfit, whether it’s tied around your neck, in your hair, or over your head!

How I Styled Paris Outfits

Needing to pack five outfits for my April rendezvous in Paris, I figured flouncy dresses and skirts would be the easiest pieces to fit in my carry-on with the added benefit of making me feel gracefully feminine.

On the first day of admiring Impressionist masterpieces in the Musée d'Orsay I knew I wanted to reflect the abstract strokes of these canvases, opting to pair the following pieces:

  • Water Lily Print Viscose Skirt ($37.49) from NA-KD, which features a multicolor floral print which looks like a work of art in itself with paint blots and sweeping curves forming the represented flora. The interior lining kept me warm on the regrettably chilly spring day while the self-tie belt secured with an oblong gold ring adding an eye-catching detail to this already vibrant statement skirt.

  • Wanting to continue adding visual interest to ensure my outfit remained artistic from head to toe, I then sought out a neutral top with an unconventional silhouette that would complement my already busy patterned skirt without becoming too outlandish. The white Halterneck Tie Long Sleeve Top ($10.49) from NA-KD was the perfect fit, flattering my neckline with an off shoulder look with cut out detailing and a removable halter neck strap. The stretchy yet form fitting long sleeve top tucked neatly into the top of my skirt to create one seamless figure.

  • Briefly pictured are my Free People Gola Daytona Quadrant Sneakers ($95) in the Orange Spice x Gold x Ink colorway, which mimic the style of trendy Adidas Sambas but are distinct enough that they’ll outlast the current fad–meaning I can carry them from one season into the next without worrying about looking outdated. While I did adhere to my own advice and wear jet black flats with every other outfit, this particular ensemble felt complete with a pop of color!

  • My final accessory was a nude Small Woven Crossbody bag ($120) from Ligne Blanche made of a lightweight neoprene material which was large enough to fit all my loose items while secure enough with a magnetic clasp shutting the interior to thwart Paris pickpockets.

On my second day spent tasting the aged grapes of Veuve Clicquot, I went with a colorway that felt quintessentially Paris–that is, Paris imagined by a black and pink poodle tween bedroom!

  • I set out to Melrose Trading Post with the intent of securing two dresses for my upcoming trip to Paris, and immediately found what I was looking for at the first booth I strolled into! I adore iamkoko.la and immediately fell in love with this midi silk striped pink v-neck dress ($50) with dainty black lace and scalloped detailing and an asymmetrical leg slit. The tie-back has an open keyhole detail as well, with each dainty element coming together to form the most perfectly girly dress I had ever laid my eyes on.

  • As promised, I found the coolest jet black Baylen ballet flats from Steve Madden ($59.97). The pretty removable ankle lace ties add to the ballet-inspired look while the grommet hardware straps crossed over top add an edgy punk element to create one of the most interesting, contrasted flat designs I’ve ever seen.

  • I accessorized with my usual gold luxe jewelry stack including a waterproof Virgin Mary pendant from London Manori and Tiny Pearl Station Necklace made of gold vermeil ($98) from Mejuri.

My third day dining on delicate desserts and admiring more artwork in the Louvre was spent wearing another flouncy ruffled ensemble, this time as a completely neutral look:

  • The Ruffle Tie Detail Blouse ($14.99) from NA-KD is one of my favorite purchases to date, featuring a chiffon, transparent material and a tie design in front which can be adorned with a clip-on rose applique. The lightweight material and ruffle layers make it feel effortlessly elegant while the asymmetrical sleeves and tie details glide behind me gracefully. While this top itself is cropped, the loose, wide silhouette means it can also be worn as a kind of camisole–which I opted to do on this particularly chilly spring day.

  • To keep my midsection warm, I wore the black Fine Knitted Bandeau Top ($13.49) from NA-KD underneath the sheer blouse detailed above. This cropped stretchy bandeau top is finely knit into a form fitting shape with a metallic, removable asymmetric brooch on the chest. When I wear this top as an individual piece the brooch adds visual interest, but in this case it became the attachment point for me to clip the silk rose from the ruffle blouse onto!

  • With a largely neutral look on top, the base of my outfit added an eye-catching detail via the abstract wavy pattern of the Pleated Chiffon Midi Skirt ($35.99) from NA-KD This midi skirt features an elastic waistband with a pleated form and a flowy fit. When paired with the two tops above, my overall ensemble was quite breezy, ensuring I felt comfortable while still aiming for overall elegance.

  • I wore my trusty jet black flats from Steve Madden again, although my jewelry stack was silver on this day to match the hardware of the shoe’s grommet straps. The majority of my rings are from Ikaika Studios, which is my long-time favorite place to shop for finger candy.

My fourth day strolling the mirrored halls of the Palace of Versailles called for an equally opulent outfit, and thus I grabbed the following pieces from my carry-on:

  • Another iamkoko.la find, I wore a little black A-line dress with a pleated silk cream skirt and ruched detailing on the square neckline including a suede bow tie and three ivory buttons. This classic style was another piece that screamed Paris to me when I saw it for the first time, and embodies the polished, elegant look I feel is perfect for this particular city.

  • Once again, my Steven Madden jet black flats were my chosen footwear for the day. Adding a sweet heart motif throughout my jewelry stack I wore my Adalynn 18k Gold Vermeil Heart Drop Earrings in Ivory Mother-of-Pearl ($104.97) from Kendra Scott and Lock It Up Gold Plated Necklace ($45) from Princess Polly.

My fifth and final day was spent admiring the artists of bohemian Montmartre, and entailed another black and white outfit with a classic silhouette and heritage pattern:

  • The Dotted Scarf Top ($10.49) from NA-KD is sleeveless, stretchy and features a form fit and a stretchy material. The one shoulder look is complemented with a dotted scarf detail that wraps gracefully around your neck and over your shoulder. The polka dot pattern and crisp black and white colorway was quite a classic design, while the thin scarf attachment is what elevates this top to the status of “effortlessly chic.”

  • For my bottoms I selected the sophisticated Black Belted Detail Midi Skirt ($54.99) from NA-KD. This midi skirt is tailored and features a belt detail with a buckle closure and front slit. Opting for a long skirt feels infinitely more sophisticated than simply pulling a regular pair of jeans, so on this trip I challenged myself to dress my outfits up with the more dapper choice of bottoms.

  • I accessorized with a pair of alluring black Prada PR A09SF butterfly sunglasses ($531) – which retrospectively feel like the perfect choice considering their product details describe this pair as “a symbol of timeless elegance and sophistication”–and that’s what Paris fashion is all about! Topping off my stack was a vintage gold watch (~$85) from Calypso Studios.
